When an Opportunity Needs a Thoughtful No

An opportunity deserves more than a quick question about whether we can take it. Love also asks what it will mean for the people around us.

but the good of others.

Paul addresses Christian freedom in questions about food and another person’s conscience. He calls believers to seek others’ good and honor God in their choices. His concern is that conduct serves people well and supports a faithful witness to the Gospel.

Weigh an invitation by its effect on others

As an everyday application, consider an opportunity or commitment before you accept it. Ask who would benefit and what responsibilities it would create or change.

Take account of promises you have already made. Speak with people sharing those responsibilities so their needs and understanding are part of the decision.

A thoughtful refusal may be appropriate when accepting would keep you from caring well for an existing commitment. If you decline, explain clearly and kindly without promising help you cannot provide.

Ask Jesus for a generous and discerning heart. Whether your answer is yes or no, let it grow from truthful attention to the good you can responsibly do.

A prayer

Jesus, guide my choices with love for others. Help me understand the responsibilities involved, honor the commitments I have made, and respond honestly. Give me generosity joined with wisdom in what I accept or decline. Amen.
