When Mercy Calls Us to Open Our Hands
It is possible to become so familiar with a need that we stop noticing the person carrying it. Scripture calls God’s people to an attentive heart and a practical response.
Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart;
(Deuteronomy 15:10, NIV, excerpt)
Deuteronomy 15 instructs Israel about debt release and care for poor neighbors within their covenant life. It warns against withholding help as the release year approaches and calls for generosity. God’s concern reaches both material need and the attitude with which His people respond.
Move from a general concern to a useful act
Learn what help is needed through a respectful conversation or a trusted local organization. Listen for what the person identifies as useful.
Consider what you can responsibly offer: a practical item, time, a contribution, or help connecting with an appropriate resource. Coordinate where that would make the support more reliable.
Ask Jesus to soften any indifference or resentment in your response. Be willing to learn from the person receiving care and to respect the decisions that belong to them.
Then follow through on the help you have agreed to provide. Mercy can become visible in the simple care of remembering a name, keeping an arrangement, and treating a neighbor’s need as worthy of attention.
A prayer
Father, keep my heart attentive to neighbors in need. Turn me from indifference and guide me toward useful, responsible generosity. Help me follow Jesus with open hands, humility, and faithful care. Amen.
