When Someone Else Has the Gift You Wish You Had
Someone else explains Scripture so clearly. Another person seems to know just how to encourage a room. You are grateful for them, and then a quieter thought arrives: I wish I had something like that to offer.
Paul has something tender and challenging to say to a church comparing its gifts.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
(1 Corinthians 12:7, NIV)
In 1 Corinthians 12, the same Spirit gives different gifts, and the many members belong to one body in Christ. Paul pictures a foot questioning its place because it is not a hand. He also challenges members who act as though they can manage without the others.
We need both reminders: receive your place with gratitude, and honor the gifts God gives other people.
Let gratitude interrupt comparison
Think of the person whose gift you admire. Thank God for the good it brings to your church. If envy has taken root, confess it honestly. You can ask God to help you rejoice in their contribution.
Then ask a trusted church leader where your own service could be useful. Learning often happens as we serve alongside others. A willing conversation may help you recognize something you have dismissed or discover an area where you can grow.
A prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for the different gifts You give Your people. Free me to celebrate others and offer my own service with love. Help us care for one another as members of Christ's body. Amen.
