How to Care for a Coconut Coir Doormat
Coir is a natural fiber from coconut husks. A coir doormat belongs where it can help catch everyday dirt while staying as dry as practical. The first care decision is where you put it.
Choose a sheltered entry
Modern Burlap's coir doormat listings recommend a covered or sheltered location. An overhang helps, but look at where rain actually reaches and whether water collects beneath the mat.
If your entrance stays wet, reconsider the location. A covered doorway is a better fit than a spot exposed to repeated soaking.
Keep cleaning gentle
Check the item's instructions first. For ordinary loose dirt, gently shake the mat outdoors or use a soft brush. Clear grit from the surface underneath before laying it flat again. Some loose natural fibers may shed during use.
Do not assume a printed coir mat is machine washable or suitable for pressure washing. Avoid saturating it, scrubbing the lettering aggressively, or applying bleach and cleaners without product-specific instructions.
If the mat gets wet
Move it out of standing water and allow the mat and the surface beneath it to dry before replacing it. Give air space to both sides. Do not put it next to a heater or other direct heat source to rush the process.

Check the shape as well as the design
A mat should lie flat and stay stable. Watch for curling edges, movement, and interference with the door. Remove it from the walkway if its condition makes stepping on it uncertain.
Rotate the orientation when the design and space allow, and check sheltered areas after windy or rainy weather. Natural coir and printed lettering can change with exposure and wear.
Store it dry
Before putting away a seasonal mat, clear loose dirt and let it dry completely. Store it in a dry place where it will not remain bent or compressed under heavy objects.
