Helping Your Family Learn the Lord's Prayer
The prayer Jesus taught can become familiar one phrase at a time. Families can learn its words together while also taking time to understand the requests they are bringing to the Father.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray with sincerity before their Father. His prayer honors God’s name, seeks His kingdom and will, and brings daily needs, forgiveness, and deliverance before Him. The surrounding teaching also calls disciples to forgive others.
Learn the meaning alongside the words
Open Matthew 6:9–13 in the NIV and read the prayer aloud. Choose one phrase to discuss. For a younger child, explain an unfamiliar word in a short, concrete sentence; for example, honoring God’s name means treating Him as holy.
Move through the prayer at a pace that fits your family. You can ask how a request connects to today: what do we need, where do we need forgiveness, or how can we obey God in a relationship?
Practice the words together, then give each person room to add a brief request in their own words. Keep the conversation attentive to what Jesus taught.
As the prayer becomes more familiar, return to its meaning. The words can help shape a family’s attention toward the Father, His purposes, and a daily life of dependence and love.
A prayer
Father, teach our family to pray as Jesus taught His disciples. Help us honor You, seek Your will, receive our daily needs with gratitude, and practice forgiveness. Lead us in faith and obedience. Amen.
