The Strength of Staying Teachable
There is room to grow even in the things we have practiced for years. Proverbs describes wise people as willing to receive instruction and become wiser still.
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
(Proverbs 9:9, NIV, excerpt)
Proverbs 9 presents the competing invitations of wisdom and folly. Within that contrast, a teachable response to correction is commended, and reverence for the Lord is named as the beginning of wisdom. Learning belongs within a relationship of humility before Him.
Receive one useful correction with care
When trustworthy feedback comes, listen long enough to understand the actual point. You can ask for a specific example or an explanation of what would help.
Consider the advice honestly before responding. Compare it with Scripture and the responsibilities you carry, and seek further guidance when you need it.
If there is something to change, choose one clear step. Thank the person for taking care to help you learn.
Keep returning to Jesus and His teaching. A willing heart can receive both encouragement and correction as it grows in faith. Invite a trusted believer to keep reading and learning alongside you.
A prayer
Lord, give me a teachable heart. Help me receive what is true, ask careful questions, and act on wise instruction. Keep drawing me back to the teaching of Jesus as I learn to love and serve more faithfully. Amen.
